Why the Move to Online VAT Registration?
Over the years, most HMRC services have shifted online, with a goal of eventually offering only digital options. Currently, 95% of businesses already use HMRC’s online VAT registration service.
Benefits of Online VAT Registration
Convenience: Businesses can register anytime and from anywhere, without waiting for paperwork to arrive or be returned by post.
Speed: Applications are processed faster, saving valuable time.
Security: Online systems are secure, reducing the risk of losing important documents.
Efficiency: Tracking applications and fixing errors is quicker and easier.
Challenges for Some Businesses
While most businesses benefit from online registration, around 5% of businesses still rely on paper-based processes. This includes:
Digitally excluded businesses (e.g., those without internet access or digital skills)
Applicants for a registration exception
Participants in the agricultural flat rate scheme
Certain online partnerships
Additionally, to register online, you need a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). Businesses without a UTR cannot use the online service.
Alternatives for Those Unable to Register Online
If online registration isn’t an option for your business, you can still request a paper form:
Call the VAT helpline to request a VAT1 form.
Complete and return the form by post.
